William Goldman made that comment about John Wayne and Cary Grant in a talk of his that I attended. Haven't found a written reference, but his Adventures in the Screen Trade goes over his views on stardom and Hollywood in detail.
Amusingly enough this article that references Muir's work talks about Heroic leadership, which is pretty much the opposite of the Hero archetype in the generational sense
