If you’re running a business, you can either create a role that you can fill with a person or find an exceptional person to build a role around. You can do much more with the latter option since you grow so accustomed to specific strengths and weaknesses.
On the other hand, there are situations where you have exceptional individuals come into your life where you can clearly see the benefit of them guiding you instead of you molding them into a role. At this point, they create a role for themselves, and that role becomes a mold for the future.

By looking at these relationships as transformative rather than transactional, you may have a different perspective on how valuable that experience is to you regardless of whether you would be “royally screwed” without them.
