Todays Episode is about the Disney Movie Mulan, we watched it on Family Movie Night this week and it really got me thinking about all the awesome real-life Mulan's there are out there doing it though - wearing a mask to cover their feminity in a man's world. This episode is in celebration of you, the women who choose to challenge the status quo and create their own destiny.

There are several moments in the film that show how difficult it is to be a woman in a man’s world. Many men don’t listen to women and even tell them to “hold their tongue in the presence of a man”. They say that “they will never be worth anything here because they are women”.

Mulan entices the young female viewers towards the idea that as a female, they too can accomplish their dreams, regardless of the gender role the society pressurizes them to carry out. This was recognized in the movie, when Mulan showed feminism, by empowering the role of a woman, as she single-handedly saved China from the Hun’s, as she showed that gender is just a piece of characteristics that we wear each day through gender performativity, and how it is important to satisfy one’s desire to stay contented and happy with life as one performs their desired chore every day, through pleasure principle. Hence, showing that feminism, gender performativity and pleasure principle in Mulan, helped the young female audience, enhance their knowledge on how they can grow to become an empowering woman for the world.

Despite the adversities, Mulan turns out to be a heroine. She breaks all of the stereotypes and saves her country, showing that she is no less a person because she is a woman. We see a before and after in her. The young carefree Mulan we saw at the beginning has disappeared. She has now proven herself to be a strong and courageous woman, just like any man.

Mulan is not a princess, and the movie doesn’t talk about her beauty. She is far from being the typical Disney princess. She represents a normal woman with hopes and dreams. A woman who wanted to overcome and show that she wasn’t in any way inferior to men.
