This is Episode 120 of Poems for the Speed of Life.
Today's poem is "Everything is Going to be All Right" by Derek Mahon.
Derek Mahon was an Irish poet who died in 2020 at the age of 78.
He was—and is—a much-loved poet and this poem is one of his best loved.
It is a poem of hope, even in difficult times. It is a poem of hope, maybe especially in difficult times.
The sun always rises. The watchful heart is always here. Days break. Clouds fly.
Other things will come to an end but these will go on, and in that there is some measure of consolation.
(If you’re looking for more from Derek Mahon, you can find another of his poems, "The Mayo Tao", in Episode 88.)
