EP | 13. A Deeper Meaning: My Inspiration For Running 100 Miles

Listen Later

One day out from the Rocky Raccoon 100 mile ultra marathon. This podcast offers a look into my mindset and purpose, as well as a special initiative that will inspire this effort.

Faithful, strong, kind-hearted, caring and hard working are just a few words that could be used to describe Sydney Petty.

To all that were blessed to know her, you knew she was as amazing as they get. She was a devoted wife to her amazing husband Joseph Ross Petty and an incredible mom to her son Zeke. She was a daughter, sister, aunt, pediatric ICU nurse practitioner and an incredible friend to so many.

She would do anything for anyone and was always ready to give a helping hand or offer words of encouragement. To know Sydney was to truly love her.

If you didn’t, this is her story:
Sydney and Joseph got married in 2020 and they were blessed to become pregnant in 2022. They welcomed their son Ezekiel (Zeke) on 9/24/2022 and it was the happiest day of their lives, but 2 days later, their joy quickly became shock and despair when Sydney was diagnosed with Lymphoma.

Last fall, Sydney underwent treatment, and then in Spring 2023 she had a bone marrow transplant. This past year has been extremely tough and filled with countless appointments, hard news and hospitalizations. In August of 2023, they finally heard the words that they had been hoping and praying for - Sydney was in remission!

In facing recent complications over the past few months, Sydney discovered that the cancer was back and was, unfortunately, extremely aggressive. Despite the physical and emotional trials facing her, Sydney remained steadfast in her conviction to be the best mother, wife, and servant of God that she could be.

On Thursday, January 25th, Sydney Petty passed away. She is now free of pain and suffering, and has undoubtedly found her eternal home with God, in heaven – in her final days she said, without fear or reservation, “my salvation is rooted in God, and I know where I’m going. It will be okay.”

Tomorrow, we will run 100 miles in her honor. We will exemplify the virtues she displayed in her daily life, and in doing so, raise money to support the family she left behind.
