This has been a part of the rare disease — or rare manifestations of a disease — experience for co-host Karyssa. 1 in 10 people is thought to be impacted by one of the ~7,000 rare diseases. In the US, a rare disease is defined as a disease that affects less than 200,000 people in the country. However, there is a difference between a disease that is truly rare, and one that is rarely diagnosed — the self-fulfilling prophecy of a disease receiving the label of “rare”.
