How many times do I hear business owners talk about not feeling good enough? Or not feeling ready? Or not feeling like they have enough experience?
Daily. That’s how often this comes up in my conversations. Daily.
How you feel about yourself has nothing to do with your audience.
How you feel about yourself has nothing to do with your clients.
How you feel about yourself should have nothing to do with your business decisions.
There are lots of reasons why we might doubt ourselves. The most common causes are messages given to us in childhood and negative comparisons against our peers.
Here’s the thing, though. You get to choose.
You get to choose whether or not you’re going to believe those childhood messages.
You get to choose whether or not to engage in those negative comparisons.
You get to choose whether or not to focus on what you’ve already achieved (and how good that feels) or what you’re yet to achieve (and how that makes you feel).
You get to choose whether or not you let your self-esteem stop you from engaging in marketing (and other) efforts that will boost your business. I know you’re thinking it’s easy for me to say. It is. Because I’m WELL PRACTICED at disengaging from limiting beliefs when they pop up. I’m well practiced at deflecting negative self-talk when that pops up. I’m well practiced at resisting the temptation to negatively compare myself to others. It’s easy to talk ourselves down. It’s harder work (but not impossible) to learn the skills to take better care of our own state of mind.
STOP letting your self-esteem get in the way of strategic decisions that will help you grow both as a business owner and in terms of business growth per se.
LEARN the skills you need, and practice them OFTEN. Here are my Top 3:
1. Stop sign - imagine a big red stop sign (or say STOP out loud) when you notice negative chatter swirling around in your mind.
2. Distraction - when the negative thoughts are loudest in your mind, find something else to do that will derail that thought train and prevent you from falling down the rabbit hole of self-doubt.
3. Evidence - remind yourself of the evidence readily available that you ARE good enough, that you ARE making progress, and that you ARE heading in the right direction.
If you’re struggling to do this alone, get help! Find a mentor, business coach, or a therapist, depending on your specific needs, to guide you towards confidence, courage, and self-belief.
Meanwhile, download my workbook “How to Slay Your Own Bullshit” (see below) for a good head start.
And above all, be kind to yourself.
Much love,
