In today's episode we talk about:
- Freshly baked bread… with a slab of butter… while really high… is the greatest thing ever - and essentially why Beacon Doughnuts exists.
- How college is NOT the only option and path to success. (We have a combined debt well over $100k and neither of us needed any of it to get to what we’re doing today.)
- Why you shouldn’t go to culinary school for career reasons.
- Why “don’t worry about it” (a line fed to high school students and their parents thinking about taking out student loans) should be considered a crime.
- What it’s like learning on the job, in the real world, compared to what you learn in the classroom + learning the value of hard work through experience and having no other option.
- Saying fuck the food industry! ...only to have me proposition him with starting a donut shop a year after leaving that world.
- Scrapping together operation “Back Alley” donuts (starting a biz from the ground up is wayyy less glamorous than it seems.)
- The importance of not being afraid to figure things out and being resourceful when starting a business. Oh, and BE PATIENT - worthwhile shit takes time to come to fruition.
