March is Women's History Month and March 8th was International Women's Day. That being said this episode is all about the talented women in metal!
Sister Rosetta Tharpe took a mix of gospel and swing to create the precursor of rock and roll. Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton's 1952 recording of "Hound Dog" is listed as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". Jinx Dawson stated singing about witchcraft and Satan with her band Coven releasing 'Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls' a year before Black Sabbath's debut. Girlschool took the stage with Motörhead in 1979. Doro Pesch is dubbed the "Queen of Heavy Metal" for her contributions to music and culture making her a global figure in metal culture for over three decades. I love that these women, among others, helped shape rock and roll and heavy metal.
