Ep. 141: "How Prayer Works" by Kaveh Akbar
Kaveh Akbar is an Iranian-American poet.
He teaches at a number of colleges and universities, including the University of Iowa, Randolph College Virginia and Warren Wilson College North Carolina. In 2020 he was appointed Poetry Editor of The Nation magazine, a position held in the past by WB Yeats, Anne Sexton and Langston Hughes.
He has written and spoken about his challenges with addiction, and has said that writing poetry has often been instrumental in helping him stay alive.
This is the second poem by Kaveh Akbar to feature on this podcast. You can listen to Neither Now Nor Never in Episode 91.
That poem explored heaven, and our relationship with it. This one covers similar ground: prayer. It is a poem of great beauty and power, outlining in fine detail the love between two brothers.
It’s also a poem about laughter. About the seriousness of laughter. About how laughter is the result of us paying attention to what is directly in front of us, and finding joy within it, a joy so unbridled that it overcomes us completely, no matter how much solemnity tries to beat it down.
