Roger Robinson is a writer and educator who has taught and performed worldwide and is an experienced workshop leader and lecturer on poetry.
He has received commissions from The National Trust, London Open House, the BBC, The National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Theatre Royal Stratford East.
He won the 2020 TS Eliot Prize for poetry for his collection A Portable Paradise, from which today’s piece is the title poem. Robinson is a black British writer, and much of his work addresses the experiences of being black in Britain.
"A Portable Paradise" reminds me a little of the Matt Goodfellow poem "A Thought", which was featured in Episode 140 of this podcast.
That poem was about a mother’s struggles with dealing with the stresses of life. This one features timeless advice from a grandmother which might be priceless in processing those stresses.
