Ep 18: Commemorating Juneteenth National Independence Day

Listen Later

On Thursday June 17, 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making Juneteenth a Federal holiday, the first since Martin Luther King Jr. Day on in 1983, 38 years ago. Juneteenth, short for June nineteenth, commemorates the effective end of slavery in the confederate states. On this day in 1865 Union General Gordon Grander arrived in Galveston, TX and informed enslaved people that the Civil War had ended and that they were free. This message came 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
In this episode we talk about this history of Juneteenth and black labor in the United States and why this is important to our discussions around career today.
