Ep. 18 | Family Separation in Cuba and Operation Pedro Pan with Professor Carlos Eire

Listen Later

Professor Carlos Eire is the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Professor of Religious Studies at Yale University. Originally from Cuba, he was separated from his parents during the Cold War through what became known as Operation Pedro Pan, the airlift of minors out of Cuba to escape potential plans to send children to communist indoctrination camps. He writes about his experience in his memoir, "Waiting for Snow in Havana" (2003), which won the National Book Award in Nonfiction in the United States and has been translated into more than a dozen languages. In this episode, Paul goes back to school to speak with his former professor about Cuban history and his opinions on whether or not family separation is sometimes necessary for the future of one's children.
