The Greatest Briton, the saviour of his nation and perhaps of democracy itself, the Lion who roared defiance in the face of a Nazi juggernaut - all these things have been said of Winston Churchill. But throughout his long and turbulent life Churchill was always a deeply controversial and divisive figure - and was involved in scandals aplenty.
Geoffrey Wheatcroft has written a very powerful ‘warts and all’ portrait which tries to balance the good and the bad. Other Churchill biographers, notably Andrew Roberts, have said he goes too far into negativity. But does he? And does it do any harm to point out that a leader who is great at one time may not be great all the time?
You can buy Geoffrey’s book, or the very different Andrew Roberts one - in our own online bookstore. All profits are shared with independent booksellers and podcasters like us (rather than going to Amazon!) In fact you can buy thousands of books there!
