We talk about a story in last week’s Herald Sun: “Hero tradies tackle bag snatcher and hold him until police arrive.”
Is this lawful? Before Brett dons his cape and perches atop the MyMP studio, can anyone simply arrest anyone else if they think they’ve committed a crime?
We also spoke about metadata, and the Government’s plan to push this troublesome legislation through parliament.
What is metadata? (Don’t ask our Attorney General, George Brandis. It’s clear he doesn’t know.) What powers will the new legislation give police and security agencies that they don’t already have?
And why do we even need this legislation, when there’s perfectly good tax law which already compels telcos and carriers to keep metadata and other business records for a minimum of 5 years?
Listen to find out.
