EP 2: Deborah Lawrie AM

Listen Later

Deborah Lawrie is the most experienced female commercial airline pilot in the world, and the first female pilot ever hired by a major Australian airline. A true trailblazer, she redefined what was possible in aviation. Her career now spans more than five decades, from her first flying lesson at 16 to her current role as a senior Virgin Australia captain.

Deborah rose to national prominence in the late 1970s when she challenged Ansett Airlines’ refusal to employ her on the basis of her gender. Backed by the newly formed Victorian Equal Opportunity Commission, she became the test case for Australia’s anti-discrimination laws. The litigation went all the way to the High Court, which in 1980 confirmed that state equal opportunity laws applied even in federally regulated industries. It was the first case of its kind in the country, and its outcome not only secured her employment but set a landmark precedent for gender equality in the workplace.

From there, Deborah built a remarkable and enduring career in aviation. She became the first woman to fly a commercial passenger service in Australia in 1980 and went on to establish herself internationally, flying with KLM in the Netherlands for 16 years as a captain and flight safety specialist. Returning to Australia in the 2000s, she flew with Jetstar, TigerAir, and ultimately Virgin, where she continues to fly today. Along the way, she helped shape aviation safety practices, championed crew resource management, and mentored the next generation of pilots — including her own son, now a captain in Europe.

Her achievements have been recognised with induction into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame, an appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia, and even having a flyover at Sydney Airport named in her honour.

In our conversation, we explore Deborah’s extraordinary path: her early love of flying, the courage it took to pursue one of the nation’s first anti-discrimination claims, and the professional milestones that have defined her 56 years in the air. Her story is one of grit, persistence, and history-making achievement — an enduring reminder of what it takes to change an industry from the inside out.
