In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Whitney Gibson, PT, DPT! We discussed the ins and outs of travel physical therapy. Her journey started with her time in a long term acute care hospital (LTACH) and her experiences with wound care there. She also talked about moving from job to job in the travel therapy life, working with multiple recruiters, evaluating the job itself and pay, looking for a living situation, packing and traveling lightly. Whitney also discusses the transitions from job to job, such as researching the documentation system (Oasis, Casamba, etc) and reaching out to other physical therapists about it. She also talks about integrating herself into the places she has been, and “becoming a local” and gaining knowledge about different cases or conditions. Whitney also talks about the struggles of travel PT, such as imposter syndrome and loneliness. She also talks about getting out of her comfort zone, from going from home health to LTACH to skilled nursing facilities (SNF), as well as adapting to research and methods. Whitney delves into financial benefits of travel therapy, including permanent tax homes and negotiation of pay.
