On this episode of The Life of Phys Podcast, I sit down with James Rice, a Midwest American photographer whose work stretches back to the black and white film days of the late 1950s.
James has spent decades documenting the ordinary moments of life, the kind that often pass unnoticed but reveal deep truths about the human condition. His goal is to capture not only the authenticity of daily life, but those fleeting instants when the ordinary transforms into something magical.
Much of James’s urban photography has taken place on the streets of Chicago, but his lens has also brought him to Indianapolis, Asheville, New Orleans, and New York City. Beyond cities, James has dedicated years to documenting rural Indiana and rural America, where he highlights the beauty and quiet catastrophe of communities facing decline. His images hold both sadness and strange beauty, preserving the dignity of places and people too often overlooked.
In this episode, James and I discuss:
His journey in photography since the late 1950s
The philosophy behind capturing the ordinary magic of life
Stories from photographing urban life in Chicago, New Orleans, NYC, and beyond
His decades-long documentation of rural America
The role of photography in exploring trauma, resilience, and truth
This powerful and emotional conversation with James Rice explores not only the art of photography, but also the healing and storytelling it makes possible.
