In this episode, Kevin Black discusses some interesting results gathered from his custom wargame simulations, used for developing leaders and teams. Despite the differences in generations today, Kevin four major similarities between two groups of participants he's worked with: experienced executives and teens. Using Real-time strategy (RTS) games as a learning platform (think of RISK on steroids), Kevin breaks down four trends - and their meanings - from two very different groups. The trends include:

  • Complexity, rather than simplicity, more often than not characterizes the planning process.
  • The "noise" of strategy execution becomes a "siren song" to be a tactician.
  • Speaking up is uncomfortable, even when self-interest is on the line.
  • Knowing and communicating the mission is best indicator of future success - and it occurs within the first five minutes of the simulation.
