ABOUT THE EPISODE
This significant portion of Acts highlights two of Paul’s three missionary journeys, where he travels with Barnabas, and later Timothy, spreading the Good News to Jews and Gentiles–anyone who will receive this gift of salvation through grace and faith alone!
BIG IDEAS
- Big Idea #1: Paul’s first missionary journey: As Paul sets out on his first missionary journey, we begin to see helpful rhythms emerge as the church seeks wisdom from the LORD through worship, fasting, prayer, and listening to the Holy Spirit. Discernment from the Spirit becomes key as Paul and Barnabas learn to either see God’s power in the midst of man’s rejection OR shake the dust off and move on from rejection.
- Big Idea #2: Saved by Grace Alone: This was a defining moment in Christian history. Before Jesus, the Israelites had been instructed to do things a certain way. Abiding by the law of Moses set them apart. After the cross, it was possible for all people (even the Gentiles who had no knowledge of the law) to be adopted into God’s family and saved.
- Big Idea #3: Paul’s second missionary journey: As Paul and Barnabas part ways after a disagreement, we see fruit from their continued pursuit of spreading the Gospel. Paul chooses Timothy and is able to mentor him to share the Gospel as well!
