In a functioning democracy, a robust journalist function is necessary. We describe why that is and what responsibilities they must respect in order to maintain public goodwill. As polls continue to indicate a decline in media trust, this message is more important than ever. Otherwise, what replaces traditional “truth tellers” may be worse than we can imagine.
