EP 24: The Imperfection Of Perfectionism

Voltaire once said that, “Perfect is the enemy of the good,” Meaning that we inevitably stifle ourselves on our road to perfection, which is an unreachable destination. Being a perfectionist is almost romanticised by our communities and the wider society, because it is viewed as a desirable trait. I mean, what could be wrong with wanting to make sure that everything you do is perfect? Well it turns out that the quest for perfectionism is a poisoned chalice, drink from it and you’ll expose yourself to a vast sequence of personal degradation, that will only push you further away from the person you are trying to be. Perfectionism is linked with low self esteem, higher levels of insecurity and social anxiety among others, which could explain the rise of cosmetic surgeries and unattainable life expectations in the modern day. I would consider myself a reforming perfectionist, trying as much as I can to distance myself from that word and its characteristics. Let’s talk about it
