Be The Good with Kate

Ep. 25: Shelley Brown, Executive Director State Theatre Ctr for the Arts

Listen Later

Today’s guest on Be The Good is Shelley Brown, executive director of the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Easton, PA.

Some takeaways: Life’s path goes in many directions, Be open to opportunities and be YOU, Bring YOUR unique skill set to whatever you do, Give the people what they want in business

This episode is for you if:

-you are an artist

-you enjoy the arts (who doesn't?)

-your career path is not one tiny, narrow, straight line (whose is or wants to be, really?)

-curious as to how theaters are working to open back up

-want to be inspired by how one person can make a difference in a community

Before heading to the State, Shelley was a television producer. Before that, a probation officer. Her multi-faceted background greatly shaped how she then took the State Theatre from nearing shutdown to the successful Center for the Arts it is today. The State is home to the Freddy Awards, has won Emmys, hosts countless national tours, concerts, weddings, and more. It is such a staple to the Easton community.

And now, as Shelley says in this episode, “especially when times are tough, people want to feel good.” The State’s first show takes to the stage September 10th, and they hope to have a full season ahead.

Hearing about the theater is but one piece of our conversation. I love the deep dive into Shelley’s career path: her courage in taking risks, how the community did not think she would be able to help the failing theater when she arrived, how she won them over and built so much, brought her own unique talents and experiences to the table, and put listening at the top of her priorities.

I am personally grateful to Shelley and the State for bringing so much positive attention to the area’s high school drama programs, the opportunity to perform on that stage as well as broadcast on television, and introducing me to friends I have to this day!

As Shelley says, It is hard to be excellent, but it is so worth it, isn't it? :)
