We’re keeping the spirit of 1995 alive on this week’s Fabulous Film and Friends where we will be following up our discussion about Ron Howard’s Oscar nominated historical drama Apollo 13, with Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning historical drama Braveheart starring himself in the title role as The Hammer of The Scots, William Wallace, and co-starring Patrick McGoohan, Sophie Marceau, Catherine McCormack, Angus McFeydan, Brendan Gleeson, David O’ Hara and the inimitable Brian Cox.And the son of a dairy farmer/biology teacher and baseball coach who I’m sure scoff mightily at the notion of Mel Gibson’s laughable throwing arm knocking anything out but a month old chicken, David Johnson, DMD
Extremely loosely based on the facts, so much so that it barely qualifies as a “based on a true story,” Braveheart tells the tale of William Wallace, a Scottish Commoner who goes ballistic on the armies of the English, led by its cruel pagan King, Sir Edward The Longshanks, after Wallace’s wife is brutally attacked and murdered by an English garrison. It’s Wallace’s bravery, battle savvy and obsessive crusade for Scotland’s freedom that inspires the country’s future king, Robert The Bruce to reject an alliance with England and deliver independence to Scotland at the Battle of Bannockburn.
