72 Hr kits are useless and there is zero empirical evidence to demonstrate that at anytime, in any known disruption or disaster, a human or family of humans had a better outcome due to the possession of this equipment. They are peddled as an easy excuse to justify that municipalities and other governments are addressing preparedness. Whereas the literature, the nerdy stuff from academics, shows that human relations - social capital and those people who surround us are a far more reliable and valuable resource than a flashlight. Governments need to be taking the resources dedicated to the 72 hr kit message and translate those into individual training on first aid, water purification, building evacuation and evaluation and many similar skills taught in CERT. Fund the creation of community groups and resilient organizations to leverage the human capital - the people will bounce back better. Seriously, we have that junk in our house already as part of normal life in a developed society. We don't need pandering from government, we need assistance in building true resilience through human capital and social engagement. That is how to develop a prepared society - not with a Gucci kit of Amazon.
