When it comes to becoming like Jesus, there is no fast track. It requires time and patience and effort. It requires a strong support system and mentors to help us along the way. We have the companionship of the Holy Ghost, the scriptures, the church, the priesthood, the temple, our ward family, and inspired leaders to help us. And we have our covenants that bind us to the Savior. All the scaffolds are in place to help us become more like Jesus and learn to live as celestial beings.

In his talk, Elder Whiting asks, “What level of effort would we be willing to give to invite His miraculous power into our lives so that we can change our very nature?” He then reminds us that all of us are under the directive to become like Him just as Jesus became like the Father. We learned last week that Jesus wasn’t born with a fulness of glory--that fullness came line upon line. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature one step at a time. Grace for grace, until he received the fullness of the Father. Christ is the model.

If we truly wish to become “as He is,” then we need to be thoughtful, deliberate, and intentional in our pursuit by gaining the very attributes of Jesus Christ.  Elder Whiting gives us six things we can do to become more like our Savior:

  1. The first step is to have a desire to become like Him. We need to have a yearning to transform ourselves, one step at a time, beyond the natural man.

  2. Ask the Father what we need to work on…. “What lack I yet?”

  3. Complete the Christlike attributes activity from Chapter 6 of Preach My Gospel.

  4. Repent and be willing to change. President Nelson taught, “When we choose to repent, we choose to change. We allow the Savior to transform us into the best version of ourselves. We choose to grow spiritually and receive joy--the joy of redemption in HIm. When we choose to repent, we choose to become more like Jesus Christ.”

  5. Select an attribute of Christ that will keenly become your focus. Make this a matter of prayerful meditation and deliberate thought.

“Your significant efforts to gain one attribute becomes the tide that raises all boats in the harbor.” While we are focusing on developing one attribute, others will naturally follow as a result.

  6. Record your experience and what you’re learning. You already know how I feel about this step! I honestly believe recording our impressions is one of the most important things we can do in learning to “Hear Him” better and to receive personal revelation for our lives.

Do One Thing Invitation

Complete the Christlike Attributes activity from Chapter 6 of Preach My Gospel. It really is a meaningful and thought-provoking exercise. It was really fun for Ron and I to do this together. We both had a good laugh, but then we came away with one area of focus that we each knew we needed to work on.
