Ep. 29 | Online Activism in the Uyghur Diaspora with Halmurat Uyghur

Listen Later

Halmurat Uyghur is a Uyghur activist and physician based in Finland. In 2017, after his parents were sent to one of the Chinese government's "re-education camps" in Xinjiang, he began to campaign for Uyghur rights and was among the first to stand up and openly talk about his parents’ arbitrary detention. Halmurat has used social media to promote his cause through hashtag campaigns like #MeTooUyghur, which has created a platform for Uyghurs to document their own personal cases of missing family members and spread awareness.
In this conversation from June 2020, Paul speaks with Halmurat about his search for his own parents and how it sparked his journey toward online grassroots activism for others in the Uyghur community whose families have been separated by the Chinese government's policies.
