EP 3: Navigating a Creative Career, Design Thinking & Uncertainty

Listen Later

Excited for you to hear this one! I chat with Reuben Png, who was my design coach and facilitator for a DesignSingapore Council project, and is the Founder of IndegoX, a transformational design consultancy.

He is also an adjunct lecturer with both the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, an ex-agency guy, and a Co-Founder of Lowercase - a platform for food, music and the arts including theatrical festivals, craft markets, art installations, product launches and other collaborative efforts.

In this episode, Reuben shares with me his personal journey through his creative career, and reflections along the way. I ask him for advice on how I can best do the meaningful marketing work that I wish to do with Zero Copycat Social, and we rant (thoughtfully muse?) about the current state of the content and social media industry, and the changes we wish to see.

Moving on! We also talk about how design thinking can - or can't - help us as we navigate a new era of uncertainty.

We end with me asking Reuben for the one thing or one lesson he'll say to the younger generation of creatives & entrepreneurs, and it totally resonates with me!

TIMESTAMPS:

1:15 I ask Reuben about his colourful creative life and career

2:20 "One of the issues with the Singapore system is that it's black and white - you're either this or that, ie an arts or science student. This is where many creative people like us struggle"

9:40 We discuss our perspectives of what's working and not working anymore in the current state of digital content and the social media industry

12:05 We talk about the need for true rest - rest from bingeing on information, articles, content, reddit, netflix, etc

16:23 I read from a blogpost Reuben wrote & we chat about it - https://medium.com/@reubenpng/my-fight-is-for-culture-more-than-community-10c4d5fd8ac0

19:51 "Routine can be a comfort and an enemy at the same time"

24:51 "How do I balance my practical needs with my creative passion?"

Reuben gives me advice on Zero Copycat Social

35:49 How can design thinking help us navigate uncertainty?

40:15 Trust the process, and let insights emerge. The process is non-linear and messy.

41:34 Design thinking is NOT a workshop. It's never comfortable.

43:18 The fundamental issue with the way we think

44:00 What is one thing or one lesson you'd say to the younger generation of creatives & entrepreneurs?
