The Wild Islander Podcast

Ep. 3 - REELING IT IN with Rick Janzen, an Islander’s guide to fishing Vancouver Island.

Listen Later

Fishing on Vancouver Island is a practice that goes a long way back, into the vague recesses of historical memory. Generations of Indigenous peoples fished these shores, lakes and rivers before many of our ancestors who immigrated here years after them did. It’s something that in some ways is synonymous with being an Islander. The bounty of the sea, lakes and river are what make this place so full of diverse life.
Rick Janzen is a fellow Islander that has been fishing, hunting, and exploring Vancouver Island since before I could walk and has been one of my mentors in many wilderness aspects of our Island. This episode is a telling of
Rick’s unlikely journey from mainland suburbia to becoming the Island outdoorsman he is today. He spins his tale of the fly fishing phenomenon of the 80’s & 90’s, his journey to the Island and how he came to currently guiding on the world famous Tyee Pool of Campbell River.
Topics include: the beginnings of fly-fishing in BC, where to take your family for fishing adventures, the history of the world famous Tyee Pool in Campbell River, and so much more.
Rick is a private guide for the Tyee Pool in Campbell River. If you would like to book with him, contact The Tyee Club at Tyeepooladventures.ca
