The Latest Generation

Ep. 36 - The Movie Prediction

Listen Later

Where I consider the results of a generational prediction I made in 2014, concerning A New Generation of Filmmakers.

Here's the prediction

"No later than 2016, we will see the first films with a true Millennial view, written and directed by people born after 1982, which will unstoppably influence movies for the following twenty years, possibly more. The first indications will be a young auteur, probably not yet 30, who is noticed for a film that is just not like what is out there now."

It's from this blog post, January 25, 2014:

https://crisis.generationalize.com/2014/01/influences.html

Quick note that there are some audio issues at points around here - I was trying a new setup for recording.

Some of those significant films:

Spielberg

Jaws: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073195/

(The first movie I was thinking of, Duel, was a TV movie. Sugarland Express was his first big motion picture directing job.

Stallone

Rocky: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075148/

Lucas

Star Wars: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/?

American Graffiti: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069704/

His first studio film was THX-1138: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066434/

Tarantino

Pulp Fiction: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110912/

Smith

Clerks: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109445/

Favreau

Swingers: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117802/

I think of it as Favreau's film, since it's written by him and about his experiences in L.A. (sound familiar...), though director Doug Liman (also GenX, b. 1965) also managed to do something with Swingers as a starting point

Go: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139239/

The Bourne Identity: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258463/

Mr. & Mrs. Smith https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356910/

And Bourne reminded me that Good Will Hunting

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/

was written by Ben Affleck & Matt Damon, and brought to the attention of Miramax by ... Kevin Smith, who had cast Affleck  as the lead in Chasing Amy.

Damien Chazelle

La La Land: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3783958/

Whiplash: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2582802/

Ryan Coogler

Black Panther: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1825683/

Not sure this is statistically sound but: For many of these folks, that Big Film was their third or close to it.

Another blog post, not really related, but about GenX films. http://stories.generationalize.com/2016/03/movies-of-generation-x.html

And yet another, going back as far as I do with it

http://stories.generationalize.com/2015/12/a-new-generation-of-filmmakers.html

Disney discussing the multiplane camera - it appears to be from the Wonderful World of Disney television show, so it's about 30 years after the camera was invented and used in Snow White.
