In moments of crisis , many of us feel a strong pull to support the people around us. That is amazing! But sometimes, supporting others can emotionally overwhelm us.
People in marginalized groups are often expected to hold emotional space for others without noticing the cost to overriding their own capacity. In times like this, the same people often end up carrying even more while feeling guilty to admit that their energy is drained.
In this first episode of a two-part mini series, I explore why boundaries matter during times like this. I also explain why we tend to ignore our boundaries, especially if our support is historically taken for granted, and how we can notice where boundaries may be needed in our lives. In the next episode, I’ll talk about how we can draw those boundaries in ways that are intentional and supportive of both ourselves and the people we care about.
