“I felt like an 8-year-old that someone brought in from Kyrgyzstan and put it in an adult body, and it was asked to perform all the adult duties.”
Nurzhan (pronounced Nurjan) Sterbenz lost her sh*t when she arrived in the USA for her graduate program. At home, she was a confident 21-year-old high achiever. She never could have fathomed how unprepared she would be for studying abroad. She rebuilt her plane while flying it, and succeeded in school and a career.
But then she lost her sh*t again. What she was sure she’d be good at — motherhood — tanked her identity yet again. And even worse this time. Listen to how Nurzhan accessed resources developed back in early childhood to become the thriving individual she is today.
Bio
Nurzhan Sterbenz is a foreign-born mom from a small country called Kyrgyzstan in central Asia. She currently lives with her family in Oregon, USA.
Prior to becoming a mom, she worked in international development as a project manager in alleviating poverty through community-based entrepreneurship. She has a masters degree in gender studies and marketing, and is currently exploring ways to reinvent herself after being a stay at home mom for the past eight years.
She recently launched a podcast called “Foreign-Born Mama.“ Here, she talks about the limiting beliefs that may hold back immigrant mothers from becoming who they wish to be. She’s on a mission to help foreign-born moms evolve into more conscious moms, so that they can feel empowered to change their lives and reclaim who they are.
Nurzhan is also an aspiring writer and storyteller, seeking ways both to tell her own story and engage with others on pathways for self discovery and improvement.
