Raised as a fundamentalist Christian in Wichita, Kansas, Ray as an adult attended both the Quaker and Presbyterian church before leaving church in the mid-1980s. Ray now identifies as an atheist and is an ardent advocate for recovery from religious trauma and positive secular sexuality. Ray earned a doctorate in psychology at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1978, is the founder of Recovering from Religion, The Secular Therapy Project, host of The Secular Sexuality Podcast, and the author of The God Virus, and Sex and God.
