You guys! This was such a thoughtful and energizing chat with Elliot Lucas Marcell Tan, as we take a deep inside look at his journey from top Singapore YouTube channel Wah Banana & Tree Potatoes, to start-up boss of Start Something (he’s managing a team of 15 now! Omgah!).
What were the humble beginnings of Wah Banana & Tree Potatoes?
How long did it take to get to a million views on YouTube, and how did that change him and life around him?
What is it like to be social media famous? And then, what?
In this episode, we ponder meaningfully about all the social media things – From our love/hate relationship with social media and influence, recalling the first time he went 'viral', being unable to escape the “YouTube funny guy” image, the downsides with being social media famous and recognized, (staying away from) drama in the Singapore YouTube scene, and the creative courage to start something again with his creative business, Start Something Studios.
We also both bond over our experiences in taking the last few years off from the social media circus, and discovering that who we are is more important than anything else we could ever do, or ‘likes’ and ‘views’ that we could achieve.
We hope this episode will give you a real, deeper perspective of social media, understand how we are being shaped & formed by what we consume online, and help us all to become better, purposeful human beings on the internet.
