I’m going to geek out on you a bit. I’m a huge fan of Marvel and I love all the movies. My little guy (who isn’t so little now; he’s actually 12) and I practically know all the lines from all the Marvel Movies.
And a surprising twist, I really like the character Loki from the Thor and Avenger movies.
Why am I telling you this story?
In the movie, Thor Ragnarok, Loki spends the start of the film facing imposter syndrome. He is an actual “imposter”, personified as Odin, King of Asgard. Loki lives in constant fear that one day he’ll be exposed as a fraud, and eventually he is.
First, let’s unmask Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is simply the feeling that you got lucky or you haven’t earned your success. It’s the feeling of you’re a fraud. It causes us to doubt ourselves, doubt our work and doubt our ideas.
If you’ve experienced imposter syndrome, you are not alone! Imposter syndrome is nothing new and it can affect anyone, regardless of job title or social status. Well known celebrities, such as Kate Winslet, Emma Watson and Michelle Pfeiffer, have spoken publicly about imposter syndrome and being deemed a fraud. I’ve often asked myself, “Who am I to call myself a Photographer?”
