On today’s show, we get serious about a very important issue between the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. This isn’t just happening “somewhere else” – We’ll discuss what’s also being mirrored here in Canada with the Pipeline No. 9 reversal, possibly affecting southern Ontario through to Montreal. It’s about the lack of consultation and consideration for the First Nations people of North America. Stephen Svenson who filmed his experience at the Sacred Stone Camp on September 3rd talks to us the day after the bulldozers stopped.

In Mass Defense – Standing Rock vs. Dakota Access Pipeline: A Conversation with Stephen Svenson
Stephen Svenson, Community Organizer, and Ally of the Original People of Turtle Island, Professor of Environmental Sociology at Wilfrid Laurier University.
When you first tune in to today’s show you’ll hear the sounds of September at Sacred Stone Camp – and they were recorded live by our first guest, Stephen Svenson. If this sounds a bit familiar, many of us, through the reporting that was done through the likes of Democracy Now, were watching the treatment of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and their supporters as they were working to protect their land from the bulldozers and construction crews – who met them with pepper spray and attack dogs on the Labour Day weekend.
Point in Conflict: The Dakota Access Pipeline wants to run a crude oil pipeline under the Missouri River – at Lake Oahe – just a half-mile upstream from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s reservation. The first issue for Standing Rock is their concern for a potential spill – something that would catastrophically affect their culture, economy, and way of life. Their second issue is that the pipeline would pass through areas of great cultural significance – including sacred sites and burial grounds that federal law seeks to protect.
Stephen Svenson is a community organizer, and ally of the original people of Turtle Island. Among other occupations, he teaches Environmental Sociology at Wilfrid Laurier University.

In her early years as a personal chef, she has worked to improve health and inspire conscientious living for patients of the Cardiac Wellness Centre, Metropolitan Hospital and student alumni of her Alma `Matter the University of Waterloo as an expert on call in Ask an Alumnus.
In recent years Anna Maria has dedicated herself to teaching the benefits of eating local, organic food while promoting culinary diversity with her teaching classes with the LCBO, The Greater Essex School boards and the Windsor, Essex Health Unit to name a few.
