Do you ever see those little short videos, those reels, where people are weed whacking, trimming, and modifying all of these overgrown grasses and shrubs and backyards? I think there's a name for it. I think it's called AMSR… I'm not sure that's what it is.
The other day I was watching one and thought, "Oh my god, when I first moved to California, I lived in one of those places!"
It was right by the beach. I had two other roommates, and they were really busy. They worked the night shift. The guy who owned the house lived upstairs, and he was always remodeling it. But the backyard? Oh my god, it was frightening. I can't even tell you how frightening it was and the front yard was just as overgrown.
Here we were, a block and a half from the beach, living in this beautiful neighborhood, and the yard was the trashiest you could imagine.
Growing up, I was exposed to something kind of similar. We lived on Forest Drive, and it really was foresty. Our backyard was literally a forest. We had one of those ziplines where you could go from tree to tree. Unsafe, yes, and a lot of kids, including me, got hurt but it was so fun.
One day my mom, and this shows what I was exposed to growing up, must have been bored, or mad, or getting revenge, or just needing to work out some anger. I think it was that. She literally raked the entire forest floor. Years and years of leaves that had been helping the trees grow and helping the daffodils bloom in spring were gone.
When I moved to California, I thought back to that. It took me about two years to clean up that backyard. It was hard. There were bricks, boards, half-dead trees, and a shed that was frightening to even look into. But as I started clearing things away, I discovered that underneath it all was this amazing backyard. Eventually, I got to the front yard too. It was a long process, over two years, but so gratifying. It's like those videos. There's the "before," the "during," when you're experiencing the work, and then the "after," when you see the result and say, "Yeah, I did something cool."
The same thing happens in life. When you conquer something, when you overcome something, your energy is tied to the clutter, whether it's in your head or swirling around in your environment. Whatever is in your environment creates an energy. It shapes your way of thinking, your way of being, your way of doing. It can even fuel procrastination and keep you from getting out of your own way. That energy becomes a detriment.
That's why I want to give you some free tools. Just subscribe or share below, and I'll send you a free six-part video series that will help you clear some of that energy up.
