In the mid-to-late first century, the church was bombarded by false teachers who began to teach that what the Disciples had taught was not the full gospel of Jesus. A group who called themselves “Gnostics” (from the Greek word, “gnosis” for knowledge) claimed that they had been given a special understanding about God and were teaching untrained Christians a false gospel.
