EP. 46 - DON'T GET CAUGHT OFF GUARD, BE A GENERALIST

Listen Later

Are you inclined to drift slowly towards what you're good at, what's comfortable for you, what's easy? Are the consequences of this behaviour more important than we make them out to be.

I see so many people who seem content with 'doing their thing' because they are good at it, but when we put it back into context, that thing was hard when they first started out, it's just we seem to forget that.

We need to expand our comfort zone by challenging ourselves to be proficient in many areas of movement (and life), to move away from being a specialist and move towards being a generalist.

Do you spend time training a wide-range of real-world, practically applicable skills, or do you ignore the fact that you are not capable in some areas and would rather spend time in the areas you are capable.

Skills such as running, lifting, carrying, fighting and swimming seem inconsequential to those who like to stick to 'their thing' (whether thats parkour, gymnastics or handstands) until the time comes where the situation calls on them to know how to move their bodies in an adaptable manner in order to respond.

The lack of having a firm base of these skills can sometimes lead to situations that if prepared for could have been avoided. Whereby he who has spent hours practicing handstands has no capability in rescuing a drowning person, or those who are obsessed with calisthenics cannot move heavy objects to clear the path to a burning building.

Don't get caught off guard, be a generalist.
