In this episode of "Coming to Your Senses," Jules interviews Dr. Grace Robinson, an academic turned businesswoman who left a stable academic career to focus on her consultancy specialising in modern slavery. Dr. Robinson shares her journey of establishing a consultancy that provides expert witness reports for court cases involving young people accused of crimes but who are actually victims of modern slavery. She highlights the importance of raising awareness about modern slavery, which is often misunderstood and underestimated in its prevalence, especially in the UK.
About Grace:
Grace is the Founder and Director of Black Box Research and Consultancy; a criminal justice consultancy specialising in modern slavery, and Co-Founder of Community Interest Company supporting children and vulnerable adults affected by modern slavery.
Grace completed her PhD on gangs and criminal exploitation in 2019 and has since served as an independent expert witness in over 300 criminal court and asylum tribunal cases. Grace has applied her expertise in modern slavery to various legal matters, including international drug trafficking, county lines, cannabis cultivation, weapon offences, fraud, burglary, and robbery.
Grace previously worked within the University of Nottingham's 'Rights Lab', where she led on projects; (1) exploring the impact of Covid-19 on County Lines. and (2) examining the intersection between cognitive impairment and exploitation. She was also involved in research investigating the prevalence of trafficking and online sexual exploitation of children in the Philippines.
During her work at Black Box, Grace has developed and lead on research projects exploring human trafficking and organised crime in Albania and Vietnam. In 2022, she consulted with members of the House of Lords on the Nationality and Borders Bill.
Grace continues to spread awareness of criminal exploitation by collaborating on academic pieces, delivering training to professionals, and participating in podcasts and interviews. She is a Council member of the Independent Drug Expert Alliance (IDEA), an Associate of the Children and Young People's Centre for Justice (CYCJ) at Strathclyde University, Visiting Practitioner in Criminology at Edge Hill University and a member of the Criminology Professional Advisory Group at Edge Hill University.
