Ep. 5 - Emergent Storytelling

Listen Later

This week, our topic is "Games That Tell a Story With Their Design and Mechanics". Some games always deliver when it comes to a telling a memorable story. Either the mechanics, gameplay, or design contributes to that developing over the course of the experience. We'll specifically avoid narrative games when sharing a list of our favorite examples of emergent storytelling in board games.

Name the game based on a brief description of its theme:

          1. In ______, players are trying to achieve dominance in various areas in medieval France.  They will get goods, coins, and victory points via production, trade, development, and by committing to the common good.

          2. In the faraway land of ______, a new Age is dawning.  The ashes of the old Age have left the Six Kingdoms empty and the twelve Tribes scattered to the winds.  Now is the time for a clever leader to unite them into a powerful alliance, skillfully using the unique talents of each Tribe to control the Kingdoms.

          3. It is the beginning of the Meiji (may-jee) era.  Once just a sleepy fishing village, the opening of foreign trade in _______ and the decline of Edo led _______ to become the premier hub of trade in all of Japan.

          4. The earth is overpopulated.  The colonization of Mars is always four decades away.  Only one avenue is open for human expansion: the world under the sea.

          5. Alchemical mages vie for control of ancient monuments and places of power.
