February 9th is a pretty significant day for two separate families for the same reason. 2006 a 29 year old mom was found murdered. Then 2008 a 57 year old mom was found murdered in nearly the exact same way. Still unsolved to this day… but what do police know now, that will break this wide open?
- Sonia Mejia was 29 in 2006 and had taken her 8 year old son to school. She was a small lady, only 5’ 3” and 125 lbs. She was also six months pregnant.
- Someone had seen a latino man holding a bottle of Coke and a bag of chips leaning against Mejia’s door and talking to her. The same witness told police the man then HIT her on the side of the head, pushed her into the apartment and kicked the door shut.
- What????
- Mejia’s common law husband came home around 6pm to find her dead in the bedroom.
- He found her partially nude on the bed with a dark blue bandana around her mouth and a WIRE around her neck; there was an orange substance consistent with the color of Cheetos on her right breast.
- Mejia’s husband later found a bag of Cheetos and a Coke bottle inside the front doorway.
- Husband said the bandana and wire did not belong to him.
- 4 things were believed to be stolen; heart shaped Ruby ring, Diamond ring, medallion of Our Lady of Guadalupe on a gold necklace, and her Gray 1998 Ford Escort keys.
- Her car was found 5 days later, 12 blocks away in a motel parking lot.
- Damiana Castillo was 57 in 2008.
- There are different reports. One says that Castillo’s son had gone to check on her after she didn’t show up for church, the other says he was going to pick her up for work. So maybe it could be both?
- Either way she was found by her son. No one answered the door so he found the extra key and let himself in.
- He said the apartment was a mess and she was laying on the ground, partially covered by a pillow.
- Records state that their death’s were similar so even though it doesn’t go into detail about Castillo’s complete state at the time of her death, I can imagine it probably had to do with the same elements as Mejia’s death.
- On February 9, 2006 Sonia Mejia was found sexually assaulted and strangled to death in Taylorsville, Utah.
- On February 9, 2008 Damiana Castillo was found strangled in West Valley City, Utah.
- Even though it happened in different cities, these only happened 1 mile apart.
- The same DNA was found in each crime scene.
- The DNA was not in the system at the time.
- In 2009 a task force was created and it was found that these two were linked and they were likely dealing with a serial killer.
- The Anniversary of the slayings prompted extra patrol officers in the area to prevent a 3rd slaying.
- Recently in November 2018 an article was released stating that they know who the killer is.
- They do not want to release his name in case he becomes a flight risk and tries to flee.
- He is currently serving time in another state and does not know that he is being charged in Utah.
- His current release date is unknown, or at least that is what they have told reporters so we can’t figure out who it is.
- Charges were filed 1 day before the statute of limitations was reached in 2010 with two counts aggravated burglary and a count of aggravated sexual assault for the two women.
- They were charged to John Doe but they wanted to make sure they could put a name to those charges eventually. They will submit an amendment to the charges to replace “John Doe” with his name as a way to get around the statute of limitations.
This is an exciting “Cold Case” to report on because it is actually relatively clos
