This week we hear from Allison Pugh on her experiences of how people adapt to economic trends such as insecurity, commercialization, overwork, and risk impacts their relationships at work and in intimate life.
There has been a trend towards "Othering" – that is, identifying people we deem "not one of us". We make them seem so different than ourselves, making it easier to dismiss them as being in some way less human, and less worthy of respect and dignity, than we are.
Allison Pugh is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia. Her teaching and research focuses on the emotional cultures of capitalism, particularly how trends in work and inequality affect intimacy and selfhood. In 2015 she published The Tumbleweed Society: Working and Caring in an Age of Insecurity, a study on the broader impacts of job precariousness. @allison_pugh
