This is Episode 52 of Poems for the Speed of Life. Today's poem is "A Blessing" by James Wright.
James Wright was an American poet, who was so sensitive to the world around him that his mental health suffered for much of his life.
His Collected Poems won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972, and his work has influenced a generation of writers, including Mary Oliver, and you might be able to hear some echoes of her work in this gorgeous little poem of a man’s interaction with two ponies in a field, and how that experience opens up some of the deepest truths of the earth, the universe and what some might call divinity itself.
You can read the poem here
(If you’re new to this podcast, you can find two poems by Mary Oliver in earlier episodes: "Snowy Night" is in Episode 2, and "The Journey" is in Episode 34.)
