Ep 52:  Are You Fearing Hope?

Whenever we have a goal that includes a personal change in some way - weight loss, behavior change, ways of communicating, parenting style, our role in a relationship… no matter what it is, we are always taking a gamble on ourselves when we are trying to change that thing about ourselves.  And gambling means risk - some of us do better with that than others. 

To make personal changes, your level of hope matters.  

Believe it or not, there is a state of mind called “fear of hope” that is quite common, and it’s important to understand because only as we understand ourselves and why we do the things we do that we are able to begin to change. 

This episode draws from Dr. Russ Ellenhorn’s book, “How We Change and Ten Reasons We Don’t”.  It explains the natural tension created between when we recognize that where we ARE is different from where we want to BE.  

When you strive for change, you are both hoping for a change in yourself, and risking disappointment that you won’t succeed.  As you move forward, you must continually choose hope and purposeful action.  But some of us have a hard time dealing with hope.
