“The sign of the cross has become an image of fear for many Jews who
remember how often it has been associated with their persecution and
suffering. There are Jewish and Christian thinkers who maintain that the
only real solution to this problem is a root-and-branch excision of
atonement theology from Christianity itself. James Carroll puts it in
typically unequivocal terms: "The cross must be reimagined, and
deemphasized, as a Christian symbol." Belief in the atonement stands
indicted for linking Christian salvation with demonization of Jews.”
That was a quote from Mark Heim’s book ‘Saved From Sacrifice’ that I shared
this past week & it started a firestorm in group discussion. Is the cross a
relevant symbol for Christian faith today? What really matters about the
cross in human atonement & salvation?
