This is Episode 58 of Poems for the Speed of Life. Today's poem is "The Art of Disappearing", by Naomi Shihab Nye.
Naomi Shihab Nye is an American poet and songwriter who was born in 1952. Born in the US, she moved with her Palestinian father to the West Bank as a teenager but the family had to flee after the Six-Day War in 1967.
A four-time Pushcart Prize winner, Nye has published more than 20 collections of poetry, including several collections specifically for children.
This poem, "The Art of Disappearing", is a gorgeous reflection on the importance of solitude, the fragility of peace, and the need to separate ourselves from the endless noise of society so that we can try to remember the things that are too important to forget.
