Lisa McInnes-Smith explains the decisions she and her husband have made as they house-share with their adult son. Because what do you do when your empty nester returns home after three years, at the age of 26!
The challenges include laying off with the “parenting” attitude – it’s now a household with adult children after all. And having discussions about finances are key. As well as encouraging mutual ownership of the household.
Addressing issues as they arise, rather then letting them sit and fester is also an important component of Lisa’s family culture. When they do have time, they try to talk through topics which help make life flourish.
This means taking time around the family table for meals. It’s an important priority, not just with adult children , but with youngsters as well. (We’ve talked to dietician Fiona Rowell about Mealtimes before).
GUEST: Lisa McInnes-Smith
HOST: Jenny Baxter
