It is not uncommon to have an unhealthy relationship with food, believing that everything you eat is against you! Although many diets claim to be the answer, in fact, the only diet that will work for you is one tailored specifically to your body's needs and not a general approach for everyone. A good, healthy diet is balanced, but more importantly, suits your particular type! Although saturated fats have had a historically bad reputation, it is only their non-compatibility with your inner workings that can make them unhealthy and dangerous and there are plenty of fats that are often very healthy for you and your gut microbiome. On top of this, calories are not all the same, different food types trigger different hormones and so the calories are dealt with in different ways. Again, balance is key here; we want to make sure that our endocrine system is burning and storing fats at the right rate for our daily exertions and schedule. One of the biggest issues that can arise as a result of your diet is insulin resistance, which can lead to serious misuse of calories and complications in the long run. The simplest and most direct way to combat insulin resistance is through exercise and so if resistance is something you are experiencing, you know what to do! Lastly, our stress and cortisol levels have a big part to play in our management of weight and carbs, and if our thyroid is not properly functioning we can see a big spike in these levels. These systems are closely linked and, again, it all comes back to understanding your body's systems, so that you can break an unhealthy cycle.
