Growing Up with Delia Burgess

Ep. 6 - Bryan Kam: does faith make you happier?

Listen Later

We were meant to be talking about the positive effects faith can have on one's life (data driven vibes not preachy vibes) and Buddhism (also not preachy vibes - in fact I wanted to ask Bryan about thinking about Buddhism as an ideology not a religion. Otherwise you'd have to call Communism a religion too (it's an argument Yuval makes in Sapiens...I'll ask him another time). Anyway somehow we ended up talking about the Unabomber's manifesto and a range of other prickly topics. We did eventually get onto some of the things we were going to talk about. Mainly I'm embarrassed because I said Joe Rogan was a WWE guy. Wtf Delia.

Thank god for the very clever people who agree to speak to me and make me see the world more clearly everyday. Bryan says something in his episode about having opinions on broad abstract categories being a waste of time. When you say "capitalism" or when I say "feminism", we really have no idea what each other means, as we don't know how that term is defined by the other person. So... the new way of arguing about "the patriarchy"? don't... (unless you clearly define what you mean by it first... or do whatever you want I just don't want you guys to have unpleasant misunderstandings with other humans when it could be avoided!) - From the Growing Up newsletter, read more at deliaburgess.blog
